LWE has built an international reputation as one of the best hunting estates.

History

1990’s – 2011

The original business (Orr Lake Elk) was founded in 1991, by Dr. Mike Bringans and Sir Wallis. Orr was created to farm Manitoban Elk, Rocky Mountain Elk and European Red Deer. Primarily for the sale of semen and velvet.

Sir. Tim is considered ‘the Pioneer’ of the red deer industry in New Zealand. The business included live capture, breeding and export. Sir Tim was knighted by the Queen of England, for his profound services to the United Kingdom.

Dr. Bringans is considered the world’s foremost authority on cervid genetics due to his proven techniques and patents involving embryo transplants, genetic screening and semen sexing (breeding for males only).

The herd was established solely from select embryos imported from some of the leading breeders in New Zealand and England. Starting from such a strong genetic base resulted in a herd of consistent quality, and within the first-generation Orr Lake was producing record book stags over 500 SCI, a significant achievement at the time. Artificial insemination from imported semen, and embryo transfer was used regularly from proven donors identified within the herd.

2011 – Today

Under new ownership and direction, the intensity and size of the breeding program increased significantly. The goal: to create a herd with the vast majority of stags being over 500 SCI inches at 6 years of age. To achieve this goal, the world’s most elaborate Red Deer embryo transfer program was undertaken. Donor females are selected on criteria of consistently producing 500”–800”+ SCI stags, and their bloodlines chosen to complement the Orr Lake genetics.

Semen has been sourced from world’s biggest sires for our exclusive North American use, including from ‘Nixon’, a proven and production record setting New Zealand sire with an 810-inch head as a 5-year-old. The results of this breeding program to date are stunning, with a substantial increase in the mass and score of the 2-year-old stags; the most anticipated genetic combinations are yet to be seen, having been born in 2017 and 2018.

About Dr. Mike Bringans

One of the world’s most knowledgable veterinarians and geneticists. Dr. Mike Bringans is currently a shareholder in the business and can remain as part of the new shareholders’ group or independent consultant.

Dr. Bringans is a pioneer in the freezing and exporting of deer genetics (through embryo freezing and transfer). He was the first to successfully achieve such a transfer in the mid ‘80s. He also developed techniques for implanting the deer embryos as well as a synchronization program for elk artificial insemination, still used regularly today.

In 1997 Dr. Bringans recorded the first successful birth of elk calves, using IVF embryos.
